Short Bio
Jin Shan is an artist, he works in different media to reflect the daily life of young people in contemporary China. Last year, when he presented his first interactive installation Slide, he began using games and audience participation as a critical part of his work. For the piece Slide, he turned the gallery stairs into a slide so that the audience had to take the plunge if they wanted to see the rest of the show. The artist turned a symbol of childhood into a game without age limits and almost enforced participation. On the slide, images presented the artist's memory of public events, moments that are deeply ingrained into collective memory. Speed becomes a metaphor for urban life.
His other interactive piece Build a home for yourself is a poetic representation of the dreams of individuals and refers to the building rush in Shanghai. Jin Shan provides a platform where visitors are encouraged to try and fulfil their desires. The gallery turns into a space for interaction; a utopian world of kid's games that adults can play.
Jin Shan is based in what is arguably the most rapidly developing city in the world: Shanghai. For him Shanghai is a symbol of light, kitsch and consumerism. Shopping has become an overwhelmingly important part of life, creating the ideal model of life for new China. Jin Shan tries to critique the new values of materialism and the social shifts that are taking place in China today.
