The flats have been designed with large windows to capture as much natural light as possible to reduce lighting costs. The windows would be energy efficient and have a special coating to reduce overheating in the summer months. The roof of each set of flats has been built off centre so that the people living there can use the balcony spaces to grow their own food and so maximise the light to the crops. The final roof has a living turf roof to provide efficient insulation and has large solar panels to provide power. There is a wind turbine sited on the roof. It is in the design of a spiral with the blades being angles like the front edge of a plane’s wing to make it efficient but reduce wind noise.
